This is a continuing hot topic among trustees and directors of non-profits, churches and community-based organizations. Jim Collins wrote a compelling monograph on the Social Sectors, "Why Business Thinking is not the answer" to accompany his widely acclaimed, "Good to Great". In it he says we need to reject the "language of business"in the social sectors and instead embrace a "language of greatness". Most businesses he says, have a desperate need for greater discipline - disciplined people who engage in disciplined thought and who take disciplined action. "A culture of discipline is not a principle of business; it is a principle of greatness."
